What Is Septic Sand?
Septic sand is the filter media in a septic drainfield. Effluent leaving the septic tank percolates down through a bed of sand, and the sand's job is to slow and spread that flow evenly so soil bacteria have time to treat it before it reaches groundwater.
What makes sand "septic sand" is what has been taken out of it. The material is washed to strip silt, clay, and organic fines. Those fines are the enemy: they pack into the pore space between grains, choke off the flow, and the drainfield goes anaerobic and fails. That is why you cannot substitute cheap fill sand off a stockpile — it may look the same in the pile and behave nothing alike in the ground.

Florida Septic Sand Requirements
Onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems in Florida are regulated under Chapter 62-6 of the Florida Administrative Code. Note that the onsite sewage program transferred from the Department of Health to the Department of Environmental Protection on July 1, 2021 under the Clean Waterways Act — older guides still cite DOH and Chapter 64E-6. Your county health department still handles the permitting and inspection, so that is who you deal with on the job. The rule specifies the filter sand a drainfield may use — clean, washed sand within a defined gradation, free of clay, silt, and organics.
In practice that means the material has to be right before the inspection, not after. If your permit or system drawing names a sand spec, tell us when you order and we will source to it. Confirm the specific requirement with your county health department or your septic engineer — the spec follows the permit, not the truck.
